Green Storage – Energy efficient Storage

November 26, 2007

Green storage means bringing / building up an energy efficient storage network. On the basis of power generation, Electrical power has a direct correlation to the consumption and subsequent discharge of greenhouse gases including CO2. This is the hottest topic that is revolving currently inside the storage community.

According to Environmental Protection Agency, the energy usage at data centers has doubled between 2000 and 2006, and it’s poised to double again by 2011. Some more electrifying statistics are;

  1. Estimated average annual utility cost for a 100,000-square-foot data center: $5.9 million
  2. Average number of storage terabytes maintained by Fortune 1000 organizations in October 2006: 600 while the same is 138 in 2004.
  3. Based on IDC projections of desktop and server units shipped, a baseline of typical desktop and server power consumption in the first half of 2007, and an average power cost of $0.0885/kWh.
  4. Servers power consumption has doubled over past 5 years which 1.5% of all electricity. This may jump to 40% in 2010 if this trend continues.

SNIA has recently launched an initiative that tries to tackle down the energy expenses, coming up with best practices, etc. The scope of the initiative includes all shared storage technologies. To know more visit;
